Raised surface sample

My rasied sample is taken from tree bark image from my sketchbook, which was developed from a photo I took.

I simplified the sketch into 3 areas, pleated & boiled, padded and folded

I used cream silk to emphasis the shapes rather than colour, I also felt the shadows of the raised areas worked well with a cream fabric. I boiled the pleated, stitched and boiled the silk on the righthand side, and added a stone in the centre to help form the padded area. I then stitched the silk onto a calico backing - adding folds to the left-hand side, to help keep the structure.

I was really pleased with the structure and how something like bark could translate as something so delicate, but I can't seem to capture this with a camera. the image now reminds me of some sort of hideous rupture!
